Junior Awards presentation, Dinner Dance and President's Day

Every year, we, as a club, celebrate the end of a season with the Junior Awards presentation, the annual SHC dinner dance and President’s Day.

On Friday evening we welcomed around 25 juniors and their parents to the club house. Thank you to all those that attended, we hope all the juniors like their achievement medals. Thanks to all those involved!

This year we held our Dinner Dance at a new venue, the IBIS, and feedback has been positive. Thank you to Daisy and Robin for organising such a fabulous event that was very much enjoyed by those that attended.

President’s Day also took on a new more inclusive format, everything at the club, games for everyone. It was a busy, hockey-filled day, with lots of enjoyment for SHC members and their families, and club friends past and present coming together.

Every year people who have made an outstanding contribution to the club’s success are recognised with awards. Along with the usual awards this year a few new ones were added. Below are all of the awards and the 2019 winners. Congratulations to you all.

Geoff Middleton Award Presented by Janet Middleton
This award is presented to the club member who has done most to welcome new members to our club. This year the award was presented to Paul Spicer, for all of his hard work with our junior section.

Club Woman of the Year & Club Man of the Year
These awards are given to members of the Ladies’ and the Men’s sections who consistently support the club, captains and committee.
Club Woman of the Year is Jenny Harding, our ladies’ club captain for the past two seasons
Club Man of the Year is Alan Warren (or Woz to most of us), our Head Coach for the past two seasons.

Ian Roberts Award
This is a new award this season, presented by Pam Roberts. Ian always appreciated that, as an umpire, you were no longer a member of a team and, sometimes, had to make decisions which went against your former teammates
So, this award is to thank the recipient for remaining neutral in the face of opposition from both sides. Without committed umpires the club could not function.
Our first recipient of this award has managed to umpire 16 games this year and play for our Ladies 1st XI. She only qualified a few years ago and has been known to play and umpire two games on a Saturday regularly. This award was presented to Leanne Baily.

The Brendish Award. Awarded to the Men’s Team of the Year.
This is a new award this season, presented by Ken Brendish, to the Men’s 1XI, captained by David Hodbod, for their performance this season achieving 4th place and narrowly missing out on promotion.

The Vivienne Hamilton Award. Awarded to the Ladies’ Team of the Year
This is a new award this season presented Vivienne Hamilton to the Ladies 2XI, captained by Sophie Duncan. This team lost every game last season and were relegated. This season they have bounced straight back and have been promoted.

Vice Presidents
The awarding of a Vice Presidency honours a person who has made a sustained contribution to our club over a number of years (and often decades). These honours are not given out every year, only when the President feels that this title is deserved. This year we award the title of Vice President to:

Ian Jackson
Emma Houlihan Hamilton
James Hamilton
Geoff Trew
Andrea Weston
Judith Weston
Amanda Lawrence

Honorary Life Member Awarded
Honorary Life Memberships don’t get given out often, but when they do, they are well deserved, and this one is no exception. We are honoured to recognise Danny Blackburn as a Life Member of SHC.
Danny has given over 30 years of service to our club – positions both on and off the pitch. He is well known for his unrivalled passion and effort for this club.

Congratulations to our Ladies 2XI and 4XI on their promotions.

Thanks were given at Presidents Day, these include:
Richard Burling for the preparation of the grass pitches
Sharon, Maureen and Trevor for providing us with fantastic food for Presidents Day but also our post hockey teas throughout our season
Daisy and Robin for their efforts in bringing the club together at our social events
Paul Spicer, Nathan Derrick and our Sunday helpers for their support and hard work with our junior section.
Jenny Hall and all the umpires.
All our players, bar staff, parents and volunteers.
And many thanks to Nicki Reynolds our Chair and all of our committee - without their efforts the club would not function or be the place we all love.
